aHoover Dam Half Marathon
Lake Mead National Recreation Area
Near Boulder City, Nevada
Sunday, December 10, 2017

On Sunday, December 10, 2017 I race walked the Hoover Dam Half Marathon in Lake Mead National Recreation Area near Boulder City, Nevada.  The temperature varied from 44 to 60 degrees with little wind and sunny skies.  The scenic out and back course was very challenging that utilized bike paths with 7 miles being paved asphalt and concrete and the rest sand and cinder former railroad bed.  There were no flat parts and the hills were long and sometimes steep.  The bike paths only crossed the secondary roads a few times and volunteers were utilized to control the sparse amount of traffic.  Water/Heed stations were located about every 1.5 miles and had enough volunteers to take care of the needs of the 413 finishers in the 5k (81), 10K (123), half Marathon (127), and full marathon (82).  The race was very well organized and I enjoyed my fourth time taking this challenging journey.  I was the only participant in the half marathon that was more than 70 years old so naturally I won first place in my age group.  I had another pleasant experience on the trip.  On my layover in Atlanta on the way to the race. I met Travis Tritt, the Country Western Star who sat down next to me to await our flight to Las Vegas where he had two performances, December 8th and 9th.  He was interesting and very friendly and accommodated many fans who wanted to have a photo with him.
