Lincoln Marathon
Lincoln, Nebraska
Sunday, May 6, 2007

I race walked the Lincoln Marathon in Lincoln, Nebraska on Sunday, May 6, 2007. The race started in the rain which continued for almost two hours. The wind reached gusts of 30 mph. I was lucky that the event was even able to occur. The 5K race on Saturday was cancelled. The weather was terrible the whole weekend with very heavy thunder showers and over 70 tornadoes in the Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska area. Lincoln had nearly 4 inches of rain and much of the area was flooded. Fortunately the worst of the weather occurred Saturday and Saturday night. The worst of weather system was moving eastward and was about 25 miles to the east by race time.
The most amazing thing to me was the volunteers and spectators. They were out there helping and cheering even during the storms. The race was well organized and had both a pre-race pasta meal and a post-race meal that was free to anyone who wanted to attend. The food was plentiful and delicious. Even though the weather was miserable, I enjoy the weekend anyway. This was my 20th state and my 60th marathon since January, 2002.
