Running from an Angel Marathon
Boulder City, Nevada
Saturday, January 5, 2008
I race walked the Running from an Angel Marathon on Saturday, January 5, 2008 in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area near Boulder City, Nevada. It was a very well organized, outstanding event even though it was in its first year. The course was a very challenging, hilly, out and back course that had the extra challenge of gusty, twenty or more mile per hour head winds for the last 13.1 miles. Many of the hills were long and steep. Even though the area is a desert, there was also the threat of rain throughout the day. Fortunately the high mountains caught most of the moisture (the surrounding mountain accumulation of snow amounted to over 10 feet in some places) and I experienced only some misty rain. There were only 64 entrants in the marathon, making much of my journey out of sight of other competitors, There were stations with water and Heed located every 1.5 miles which is a better ratio than most marathons offer. The volunteers were very enthusiastic despite the fact that they had to be very cold from the weather conditions. I am glad I did this marathon even though my time was somewhat slow.
