Run With The Horses Marathon
Green River, Wyoming
Saturday, August 23, 2008
I race walked the Run With The Horses Marathon in Green River, Wyoming on Saturday, August 23, 2008. It was a nice day for the event. I boarded the bus to take me up in the White Mountains to the starting line at 5:15 AM and the race started at 6:30 AM. The temperature was in the upper 40's with little wind as the sun was coming up. The starting line was an altitude of 6800 feet and the first 24 miles was on a dirt and gravel road. After the race started the first five miles had us climb to 7500 feet on a rolly course. The next 13 miles consisted of ups and downs with the altitude fluctuating between 7500 feet and 7600 feet. Then came 6 miles of rolly descent from 7600 feet to 6200 feet. The last 2 miles was on pavement through Green River to Expedition Island were Powell started two of his famous explorations of the West in the 1800's. The finish temperature was near 80 degrees. The dirt and gravel road was through the BLM 392,000 acre reserve for wild horses. I was able to see 5 wild horses plus 24 miles of unbelievable scenry. Water and sports drink stations were every two miles. I had a wonderful time even though walking on dirt and gravel through the changes of altitude was very challenging.
