BI-LO Myrtle Beach Half Marathon
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Saturday, February 19, 2011
The sky was clear, the wind was gentle, and the temperature ranged from 52 to 63 degrees as I race walked the BI-LO Myrtle Beach Half Marathon in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Saturday, February 19, 2011. The event was very well organized with nearly 7000 participants in the full and half marathon. Several hundred police and other volunteers were needed to ensure that traffic stayed out of the lanes that were devoted to the race which followed a course that was nearly flat. Water/Powerade stations were located every 2 miles and were manned by plenty of enthusiastic volunteers. Spectators were numerous along the entire course. The marathon had an extremely unique occurrence as a woman named Kathleen Castles of New Providence, New Jersey was the overall winner of the race with an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 2:40:11. It was a very enjoyable trip to coastal South Carolina.
