Melbourne Half Marathon
Melbourne, Florida
Sunday, February 3, 2013
I race walked the Melbourne Half Marathon in Melbourne, Florida on Sunday, February 3, 2013. The temperature started at 43 degrees and climbed to the low 60’s by the time I finished the race. The skies were mostly sunny with a 5 to 10 mph wind. The course was mostly flat; however, there were two bridges of about 75 feet in height which crossed over the Indian River, one in mile 6 and the other in mile 12. There were plenty of police to insure the safety of the runners and keeping traffic out of the lanes dedicated to the event. Water/Gatorade stations were located every 1 to 1.5 miles and were manned by plenty of enthusiastic volunteers. The event was very well organized and fun. There were two runners in the marathon who have some noteworthy accomplishments. The first was an acquaintance, John Pyle who between March 1, 2012 and May 20, 2012 ran almost 3200 miles from San Francisco, California to Key West, Florida to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. The second is my friend, Larry Macon, a lawyer from San Antonio, Texas who in the calendar year 2012 completed 153 sanctioned marathons, just over 4000 miles, to set a Guinness World Record for the most marathon completed in a year.
