Chickamauga Battlefield Half Marathon
Fort Oglethorpe. Georgia
Saturday, November 14, 2015
I race walked the Chickamauga Battlefield Half Marathon in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on Saturday, November 14, 2015. The temperature was cold at the start as it was 36 degrees. Since there were clear sunny skies and no wind in the National Military Park and the temperature gradually rose to 50 degrees, it was good racing conditions. The course which for the most part was completely closed to traffic utilized 11 miles of paved roads and 2 miles of gravel roads had much up and downs; however, none of the hills were challenging. Water/Powerade stations were located every 2 miles and were manned by plenty of efficient, enthusiastic volunteers. There were approximately 800 participants in the half marathon and 500 in the accompanying marathon. There were only a few spectators along the course as access was quite restricted for the most part. Only one major road was crossed twice and had park rangers directing the traffic. Fort Oglethorpe Police controlled the start finish area and any traffic. I have done this event 4 times – the marathon once and the half marathon thrice. I have always enjoyed myself and have reflected each time on the sacrifices our military personnel have made in order for my life in the USA to be as wonderful as it is. The battle at Chickamauga lasted two days and had more US casualties (Union and Confederate) than any other two day battle that the US military has fought.
