Williams Route 66 Half Marathon
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Sunday, November 19, 2017
On Sunday, November 19, 2017 I race walked the
Williams Route 66 Half Marathon in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The temperature varied from 36 to 51 degrees
with sunny skies and a light breeze. The
course was on city streets that were closed to traffic. Police were stationed at each intersection to
keep the 1564 finishers in the marathon and 4728 finishers in the half marathon
safe as the traffic was backed up throughout the course. The course had quite a bit of up and down with
no particular place that was very challenging.
Water/Gatorade stations were located from 1.5 to 2 miles apart and were
manned by plenty of efficient friendly volunteers where each station utilized
several tabled spread out with Gatorade first and water second at each helping
alleviate some of the congestion. The
Marathon Maniacs, Half Fanatics, and 50 State Marathon Club who supplied more
than 800 of the entries were given special treatment with our own starting VIP
area with our own porta=potties, our own special VIP finisher area with our own
food and drinks, and special finisher’s medals.
That was really appreciated by me and the other club members. I was surprised to see my friend, Bart Yasso
announcing at the finish line as he has retired from Runner’s World and cut
back on his appearances at races because his Lime Disease has been causing him
problems. This is the fourth time I have
done this event, one marathon and three half Marathons. I have always enjoyed how well run this event
has been each time and the special treatment shown to the participants.
