Daytona Beach Half Marathon
Daytona Beach, Florida
Sunday, February 4, 2018
On Sunday, February 4, 2018 I race walked the Daytona
Beach Half Marathon in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The temperature varied from 60 to 71 degrees with mostly cloudy skies changing
to sunny and a breeze starting at 5 mph and changing to 10-15 by the end of the
race. Water/Gatorade Stations were
located approximately every 1.5 miles and except for one station were manned by
plenty of friendly efficient volunteers taking care of the 1002 half
marathoners and 82 two person relays.
The roads were completely closed to traffic or had a dedicated lane for
the participants. Most intersections had
two or more police officers controlling the cross traffic. The race started on pit road of the Daytona
International Speedway, made 3.2 miles around the track, went through the
stands to the roads outside, proceeded toward the Atlantic Ocean crossing a
high bridge over the inter-coastal waterway, taking an alternate route instead
of the beach where the tide was too high, returning to the Speedway through the
stands, completing the lap around the track, and finishing on pit road just
past the start line. The event has
always been extremely well organized and fun to do. This was my fifth time doing the half
marathon of this event.
