Garmin Half Marathon
Olathe, Kansas
Saturday, April 21, 2018
On Saturday, April 21, 2018 I completed the Garmin
Half Marathon in Olathe, Kansas. The
predicted rain held off until after I finished.
The temperature varied from 48 to 52 degrees with overcast skies and a
10 mph wind. The course was on paved
city streets and paved bike paths and featured mostly gentile up and downs that
had two short moderately challenging hills.
The streets were either closed to traffic or had a dedicated lane for the
1522 finishers in the half marathon. Police
were stationed at intersections controlling the cross traffic which did not
seem to be backed-up significantly in any location indicating that alternate
paths were available. There was also a
10K and a full marathon. Water/Gatorade
stations were located approximately every 1.5 miles and had tables spaced on
each side of the road with Gatorade first and water second making the stations
less crowded than most events. There
were plenty of friendly efficient volunteers taking care of the needs of the
participants. Being located in Kansas the
event always has a Wizard of Oz Theme and I have done the half marathon twice. Many of the participants dress as characters
from the movie of L. Frank Baum’s book: The Wizard of Oz. Both times the event has been well organized
and fun to do. The event starts and
finishes at the Garmin International Headquarters and Factory.
