Green Lake Half Marathon
Green Lake, Wisconsin
Sunday September 2, 2018
On Sunday, September 2, 2018 I race walked the Green
Lake Half Marathon in Green Lake, Wisconsin.
The temperature varied from 68 to 76 degrees with mostly cloudy skies
and little wind. The course was on paved
rural roads, some of which had many potholes and puddles. There were many hills some of which were
moderately challenging. Police were only
needed at the start to close a road off to traffic as the race started in the
small town of Green Lake. One lane of a
road was barricaded off for the finish area.
There were volunteers stationed along the route to insure that the 133
finishers in the half marathon and the 230 finishers in the 5K navigated the
routes successfully. The roads were not
closed to traffic but fortunately traffic was sparse and watched out for the
participants. Water/Gatorade stations
were located from 1.5 to 2.5 miles apart and had plenty of friendly efficient
volunteers to supply everyone with the necessary liquids. This is the ninth year for this event and my
first time completing the half marathon.
It is a small well organized friendly fun event that I enjoyed
doing. I was the oldest person in the
half marathon and the only one in my 70 to 79 age group so naturally I won the
first place medal. We really lucked out
on the weather as it did not rain during the event. Major thunder storms and tornados have been
occurring for the past ten days and is expected to continue at least one more
week. It poured during the night before
the event and a major storm happened about an hour after the event ended.
