Marshall Half Marathon
Huntington, West Virginia
Sunday, November 4, 2018
On Sunday, November 4, 2018 I race walked the Marshall
Half Marathon in Huntington, West Virginia.
The temperature was 32 degrees when I started and 45 degrees when I
finished with little wind and sunny skies.
Even though the event was in West Virginia, the course was relatively
flat with no challenging hills with 10 miles of paved roads, 3 miles of gravel,
sand and slippery mud bike path. The last section of the course was a steep
short downhill onto the artificial grass in the Marshall Football Stadium with
80 yards down a sideline followed by 80 yards through the middle of the field
finishing on the goal line. The course
was completely closed to traffic with police, firemen and volunteers at
intersections and other key places. Water/Gatorade
stations were located approximately 1.75 miles apart and were manned by plenty
of friendly efficient volunteers taking care of the needs of the 86 finishers
in the 5k, the 953 finishers in the half marathon, and the 312 finishers in the
full marathon. This was the third time I
have done this event which has always been well organized and fun. I even managed to place second in my 70 and
over running age group even though I walked the entire way.
