Space Coast Half Marathon

Cocoa, Florida

Sunday, November 25, 2018

On Sunday, November 25, 2018 I race walked the Space Coast Half Marathon in Cocoa, Florida.  The temperature varied from 66 to 72 degrees with little breeze and fog throughout.  This year saw a full marathon and two half marathons using both halves of the marathon course.  There were 812 finishers in the full marathon, 2787 finishers in the south half marathon, and 1943 finishers in the north half marathon.  All the events started in the same place at the same time to a video on a big screen television of the first project Mercury launch with the start coinciding with lift off.  I did the south half marathon.  All of the courses went along the Indian River which were relatively flat with no challenging hills or cross intersections.  For the most part the course was closed to traffic; however, there were a few residents along the course who needed to exit there property and exit at the nearest intersection.  Police and volunteers were stationed at intersections to ensure the safety of everyone.  Water/Gatorade stations were located about every mile and had two tables with water and two tables with Gatorade and many friendly efficient volunteers taking care of the needs of the participants.  This event is always extremely well organized and a real pleasure to do.  I have done ti 16 consecutive years, 6 marathons and 10 half marathon.  When I completed the south half marathon, I now have completed 400 Marathons (135) and half marathon (265).
