Treasure Coast Half Marathon
Stuart, Florida
Sunday, March 3, 2019
On Sunday, March 3, 2019 I race walked the Treasure
Coast Half Marathon in Stuart, Florida.
It was hot as the temperature varied from 70 to 81 degrees with sunny
skies and little breeze. The course was
fairly flat with two crossings of a high level bridge on city roads. Some of the roads were completely closed to
traffic, others had a dedicated lane or sidewalk or bike lane, and others that
were in residential areas were open to traffic but had very little. Police and volunteers were located at key
places to help keep the 163 marathon, 567 half marathon and 59 four person
marathon relay participants safe from the traffic. Water/Gatorade stations were located every
1.5 miles and except for the first one had plenty of friendly efficient enthusiastic
volunteers attending to the needs of the participants. The first station was completely closed down
and out of fluids by the time I reached it.
There were many people behind me that also did not receive any liquid as
well as many in front of me. Fortunately
on such a hot day it was to only one that did not supply liquids to some of the
participants. This is the first time I
have done this event. It was well
organized and fun. All the participants
were offered a ticket for a music festival that was in the same place as the
packet pickup. I took advantage of the
Saturday evening event that started at 6 PM with the featured tribute to Pink
Floyd band starting at 8 PM. The
tribute band was very good; however, I left when they were halfway done at 9:30
as the race start was 6 AM requiring me to awaken at 4 AM. Usually when I have to get up at 4 AM I go to
sleep at 8 PM. It is a shame that very
few of the participants were able to enjoy the music.
