Delaware Half Marathon
Wilmington, Delaware
Sunday, April 28, 2019
When I finished the Delaware Half Marathon in
Wilmington, Delaware on Sunday, April 28, 2019, I finished my 200th half
marathon since I had my left knee replaced on February 20, 2012. The temperature varied from 50 to 65 degrees with
5 to 10 mph winds and some higher gusts and overcast skies which included about
an hour of light drizzle. The course was
on paved city roads and paved bike paths that for the first three miles was
relatively flat. After that the course was quite hilly including a 2 mile
uphill between miles 5.5 and 7.5 which then became a 2 mile downhill between
miles 10 and 12. None of the hills were
very challenging. Police officers
controlled intersections to insure the participants’ safety; however, on two
separate occasions as I was approaching a car went through the intersection ignoring
the police officers who told them to stop.
Water/Gatorade stations were located approximately every 2 miles and
were manned by plenty of friendly efficient volunteers taking care of the needs
of the 326 finishers in the full marathon and 785 finishers in the half
marathon. This is the sixth time I have
done this event, 2 marathons and 4 half marathons. The event is always well organized and
fun. I even managed to earn second place
in my running age group despite the fact that I walked the entire way.
