Sioux Falls Half Marathon
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Sunday, September 8, 2019
On Sunday, September 8, 2019 I race walked the Sioux Falls Half Marathon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The temperature varied from 55 to 63 degrees with a 5-10 mph wind and a continuous light drizzle the entire time. The course consisted of 9 miles of city roads and 5 miles of paved bike paths. The course was completely closed to traffic with police at every intersection. All turns were marked with cones, signs and had 2-5 high school volunteers directing the participants as well as cheering for them. The course began and ended in the Denny Sanford Premier Center so the participants remained dry and warm before the start and could recover after finishing in a dry warm place. Water/Powerade stations were located approximately every two miles and had plenty of friendly efficient volunteers taking care of the needs of the 985 finishers in the half marathon. There was also a full marathon, a 10K and a 5K. I especially appreciate the numerous police and volunteers who remained diligent, friendly and on duty doing their tasks despite the rainy weather. The event was extremely well organized, fun and the people of Sioux Falls were very friendly; in fact, there were many spectators along the course cheering in the rain. This was the second time that I have done this event. I even managed to get 3rd place in my running age group even though I walked the entire way.
