Palm Beach Half Marathon

West Palm Beach, Florida

Sunday, December 8, 2019

On Sunday, December 8, 2019 I completed the Palm Beach Half Marathon in West Palm Beach, Florida.  The temperature varied from 69 to 75 degrees with mostly cloudy skies and a 5 to 10 mph breeze,  The course was entirely flat arranged in two out and back journeys with 7.5 miles being north of the start/finish and the rest south on city streets along the west side of the Intercoastal Waterway that were completely closed to traffic.  Police controlled the single intersection that crossed the course and also patrolled the entire course with motorcycled officers.  Water/Gatorade stations were located every mile and had plenty of friendly efficient mostly teenaged volunteers taking care od the needs of the 806 finishers in the half marathon and the 245 finishers in the full marathon.  I have done the event 14 times 5 full marathons and 9 half marathons.  The 2015 event was a total disaster in organization and caused the event to not be held in 2016.  With new race directors the event started again in 2017 but I decided that I would skip the event and see if the problems had been corrected.  After consulting friends who had done the 2017 event and discovering that it was well organized again, I did the event in 2018 and 2019.  The event is well organized again but is struggling to attract participants.
