Space Coast Half Marathon
Cocoa, Florida
Sunday, November 29, 2020
On Sunday, November 29, 2020 I finally got to do an
in-person event when I completed the Space Coast Half Marathon in Cocoa,
Florida. The last in-person event that I
did was the Cowtown Half Marathon in Fort Worth, Texas on March 1, 2020. The Corona Virus 19 caused all my events
between these two events to be cancelled and there are several of my future
events that are also cancelled. It was a
wonderful day for the event as the temperature varied from 66 to 75 degrees
with sunny skies and no breeze. The race
directors worked with the local health department to establish rules and
regulations to minimize the chance of spreading the virus. I came to the event with confidence that I
would be safe because these race directors have always held well-organized
first-class events and could ensure that the regulations would be enforced and
followed by the participants. The
emphasis was on masks and social distancing with minimal amount of close interaction
among the participants and with the volunteers.
There was also a virtual option for anyone who wanted it; thus, making
less in-person participants. As a
further precaution I arrived extra early so I could park my car close to the
starting area. As a result, I could
remain in my car until just before the start and observe how much cooperation
was being followed by the participants before the race. If people were not cooperating, I would not
have been exposed to anyone and would have driven away without doing the
event. I was happy to see that people
were cooperating extremely well so I got out of the car and did the event. At no time during the event did I feel
unsafe. I had a wonderful time and I
even managed an excellent time which to my surprise let me receive first in my
75-79 male age group and as usual I race-walked the entire way,
