Shoreline Half Marathon
Hamlin Beach, New York
Saturday, July 13, 2019
On Saturday, July 13, 2019 I race walked the Shoreline
Half Marathon in Hamlin Beach, New York.
The temperature varied from 64 to 75 degrees with sunny skies and a wind
speed of 5 mph. The course was flat for
the most part on 12 miles of paved rural roads and 1 mile of somewhat paved
paths that had to be utilized because the normal bike path had sections covered
by water because Lake Ontario is at a very high level that has damaged much
lake front paths and properties. Volunteers
were stationed at all of the turns to ensure that the 413 finishers in the half
marathon and the 418 finishers in the 5K were able to navigate the proper path
successfully. There was one police
officer stationed at a major intersection and several police officer patrolled the
course where the roads were not closed to traffic which for the most part was
very sparse. Water/electrolyte stations
were located every two miles and had plenty of friendly enthusiastic efficient
volunteers taking care of the needs of the participants. I do not know what brand of electrolyte was
utilized; however, I know it did not work as well as Gatorade or Powerade. The race is well organized and fun and this
was the second time I have done the half marathon. The other time was in 2013. I did manage to earn the third place male 70+
running age group award for my walking efforts.
