Quad Cities Half Marathon
Moline, Illinois
Sunday, September 22, 2019
On Sunday, September 22, 2019 In race walked the Quad Cities Half Marathon in Moline, Illinois. The temperature was a constant 70 degrees with 10 to 15 mph winds a light rain or drizzle the entire time. The course consisted of 8 miles of city roads and 5 miles of paved bike paths. All road were closed to traffic with police officers and volunteers ensuring the the course remained that way. The race began in Moline, Illinois went across the Mississippi River on the I74 Bridge into Iowa. It went up a moderate mile long hill out of the river valley, then continued on two miles of other roads to the bank of the Mississippi River. The course continued along the river on a five mile bike path. After a mile of city roads, the course returned to Illinois on a metal grated bridge into the Army Rock Island Arsenal. Unfortunately the three foot wide rug path across the bridge that had been placed on the grating for the participants to have better footing the other five years that I have done the event was not there and the rain caused the journey across the bridge to be very slippery and somewhat dangerous. I had to slow down a lot to ensure my safety. After 2.5 additional miles the course exited the arsenal and finished where it started. Water/Gatorade stations were located approximately every 1.5 miles and only had the Gatorade at every second station. There were many friendly efficient volunteers at every station taking care of the needs of the many participants in the half marathon, full marathon and full marathon relay. I really appreciate the police and volunteers that continued to do their duties in a friendly efficient wat despite the miserable rainy conditions. The race has always been well organized and fun and I look forward to returning in the future.
