Mobile Half Marathon
Mobile, Alabama
Sunday, January 12, 2020
On Sunday, January 12, 2020 I race walked the Mobile Half Marathon in Mobile, Alabama. The temperature varied from 55 to 63 degrees with foggy and/or overcast skies with a light breeze. The course was flat on city streets that were completely closed to traffic. However, the numerous pot holes, cracks and speed bumps caused the participants to have to pay more attention to their steps than would normally be expected on a paved road. Every intersection had 1 to 2 police officers and 1-2 other volunteers to control the traffic. There were also volunteers at business driveways. Because there were so many police officers involved, I assume that they volunteered their time. There were 417 finishers in the half marathon and 284 finishers in the full marathon. If the police were paid there would not be anything left for the charities. Water/Powerade stations were located every 1 to 2 miles and had plenty of friendly efficient volunteers who were mostly boy scouts and troop leaders. I have completed this event two times- 2017 and 2020. The event is well organized and fun. I was unaware that they had a race walking when I entered this event. I was not the only one that was unaware as there was only one woman entered as a race walker. I entered as a runner and finished fourth in my 70-74 male age group. As always I walked the entire way.
