Miami Half Marathon
Miami, Florida
Sunday, February 9, 2020
On Sunday, February 9, 2020 I race walked the Miami Half Marathon in Miami, Florida. I have complet4ed this event all 18 times that it has been held. The temperature varied from 71 to 78 degrees with sunny skies and a breeze of 10-15 mph with gusts that were much higher. The course was on city roads that were closed to traffic or had dedicated lanes for the 15587 participants in the half marathon and 3118 participants in the full marathon. There were plenty of police officers controlling the traffic; however, they did not seem to be very enthusiastic about performing their duties when compared to events in other big cities that I have done. It is possible that this might be a result of the extra duties that occurred the previous two weeks when Miami hosted the Super Bowl. Water/Gatorade stations were located every 1 to 2 miles and had plenty of volunteers if the stations had been a little better organized. The Gatorade was not poured ahead of time and could not keep up with the demand. The packet pick-up was again held in the Mana Wynwood which is located in one of the less desirable areas of Miami and does not have enough public parking for such a big event. The event is well organized and features participants from all fifty states as well as more than 80 different countries, especially Hispanic countries.
