Key West Half Marathon
Key West, Florida
Sunday, January 19, 2020
On Sunday, January 19, 2020 I race walked the Key West Half Marathon in Key West, Florida. It was a nice day for the race as the temperature varied from 71 to 80 degrees with partly sunny skies and a 5-10 mph breeze. The course was flat on pave city streets that were closed to traffic or had a dedicated lane for the approximately 2000 participants in the half marathon. Every intersection and turn had several volunteers controlling traffic and directing participants. There were also police stationed at key intersections and motorcycle patrol officers patrolling along the route. Water/Gatorade stations were located approximately every mile and consisted of several tables spaced a reasonable distance to help alleviate crowding. Each station had a large number of friendly efficient volunteers to take care of the needs on the participants. The event is in my hometown: Key West, Florida. It is very well organized and recommended by Runner’s World magazine as a top destination race. I have done this event 12 times and always enjoy myself. The post-race party features a local nationally known band: Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band and plenty of beer. The volunteers are really appreciated and there is both a prerace and a postrace party just for them. A large number of the volunteers are retired military people and family who are part of our Snow-Bird population.
