Rocket City Marathon
Huntsville, Alabama
Saturday, December 13, 2008
The temperature was 27 degrees as I started the Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville, Alabama on Saturday, December 13, 2008. The temperature rose to around 42 degrees as I finished the race on a mostly cloudy day in which there was only a little wind. The race course did not look as challenging as it turned out. All the hills were very gradual, but there were quite a few throughout the course. Water/Powerade stations were located every 2.5 to 3 miles and were manned by plenty of enthusiastic volunteers. The roads were open to traffic throughout the subdivisions; however, it was light. Police controlled the traffic at the intersections and cones gave the competitors their own lane on the few regular roads. I felt safe throughout the race. There were not very many spectators braving the cold but the ones who watched were very enthusiastic. Despite the cold, I enjoyed myself.
