Delaware Half Marathon
Wilmington, Delaware
Sunday, April 29, 2018
On Sunday, April 29, 2018 I completed the Delaware
Half Marathon in Wilmington, Delaware.
The temperature varied from 47 to 52 degrees with partly sunny skies and
a wind of 10-15 mph with higher gusts.
It was a little cold in exposed areas when the wind hit me. The course was on paved roads and some paved
bike paths and wooden boardwalks. The
first 6 miles were relatively flat and the rest of the course was somewhat
hilly. One uphill lasted over a mile
from just before mile marker 6 to just past mile marker 7 and was also used as
a downhill between mile markers 10 and 12.
It was not very steep but was long.
There were also two short hills that were steeper and were used as both
up hills and down hills. Police
controlled cross=traffic at most intersections.
Water/Gatorade stations were located approximately every 1.5 miles and
were manned by plenty of friendly efficient volunteers. I really appreciate the volunteers and police
as they did their duties even though it was quite obvious that some were quite
uncomfortable because of the cold wind.
I have done this event 5 times – two marathons and 3 half marathons and
have always enjoyed myself. It is always
well organized and fun and has existed for 15 years stabilizing at between 3000
and 4000 participants. My good friend,
Larry Macon from San Antonio, Texas who has completed over 1600 marathons in
his career and has done the marathon in all 15 years of the event’s existence
was there.
